Have you been on the style sidelines when it comes to bangs (or fringe for you Brits)? The great thing about bangs is that there is literally a style for everyone, regardless of your face shape. The trick is selecting the right style of bangs, taking into consideration your face shape and features.
First things first, not all oval or heart shaped faces are created equal. Forehead size, chin shape and cheekbone structure all play a factor here. However, here are some good rules that we can outline that are great talking points for your next visit to the salon.
Bangs for Round Shaped Faces
Round shaped faces have few sharp angles and are characterized with the same height as width. Typically, you are looking to add height to lengthen the face and add more space between chin and hairline to show off each feature.
This means that showing as much forehead as possible is typically the aim here. We recommend side swept or textured bangs that keep your eyebrows and some of your forehead in view.
If you’re feeling particularly gutsy, you can always mirror Ginnifer Goodwin and try a micro fringe, which is extra short and textured across the top.
Bangs for Heart Shaped Faces
Often considered a hairdressers dream, the heart shaped face is really fun to dress up with layers. This sweetheart shape has a pointier chin with a wider cheekbone and has a bit of a ‘V’ at the center of the hairline, sometimes called a widow’s peak.
Curtain bangs, or those that go straight across the forehead, are a good choice for most with a heart shaped face as it distracts from the ‘V’ in the hairline and also pulls attention upward towards the center of the face. Keep your bangs textured and around the eyebrow area to avoid making your forehead look wider.
Long wispy layers that pull to one side can also be a good choice to show off the hairline, add height to your face, but still balance the wideness across the forehead.
Bangs for Square Shaped FacesA lot of square face styles feature bangs, and likely some of your favorites (ahem, Demi Moore)! A square face has a strong jawline and features sharp angles and typically has equal width to height.
Many Hollywood beauties that have a square shaped face skip the bangs, but most have tried bangs at one time or the other. The most flattering bang styles play up the sides of the face in the right way. Think of center parted bangs, side swept bangs or even curtain bangs that are a little longer on the sides. The trick is to keep the bangs soft so that you aren’t adding any sharp angles to your face.
Bangs for Oval Shaped FacesOval faces are considered the ideal face shape, at least for bangs! Oval faces are really the middle of the road shape – they are neither too long or too wide. They are not too angular and has no sharp corners. Typically the face is a small amount longer than wider and the widest point would be across the cheekbones.
Those of you with a balanced, oval face shape can pull off any style of bangs (almost), so it may be easier to discuss our singular request rather than the best styles. If you have an oval face, please never try the micro-bang trend. It’s a rather hard style to pull off in the first place, and it creates too much height, drawing the face even longer.
