One of the questions we are often asked at our Irvine hair salon is “How often should I wash my hair?” This is also one of the most searched beauty questions online so it’s something we wanted to take the time to answer for all of our clients wondering.
How often you should wash your hair depends on several factors including the thickness of your hair, its oil content and how dry your scalp is. Shampoo is designed to remove dirt and oils from the hair and scalp. On the other hand, some oils are useful and the amount of oils which develop vary from one head of hair to the next. Below is a general guideline for the frequency at which hair should be washed according to hair type to give you a better idea as to how often you should wash your hair.
By nature, fine hair doesn’t hold as much volume as thick hair and it has the tendency to feel oily faster. If fine hair is shampooed too much or too little, it can lose movement. This is why it’s best to wash fine hair three times per week. It’s important to use a light conditioning shampoo with a volumizing formula that won’t add weight to the hair, causing it to become lifeless.
Thick Straight Hair
If your hair is thick and straight, you should wait a few days between washes so your hair remains manageable. At the most, you should wash thick straight hair no more than every other day with a shampoo that’s infused with keratin oil or something similar.
If you have wavy hair, it’s recommended that you wash your hair three times per week. This will do away with build-up that may be causing your hair to straighten from the weight of the oils. Wavy hair can appear greasy when the oils are not uniformly distributed so it’s best to comb or brush wavy hair often to evenly distribute the oils.
Curly or Kinky Hair
It’s important not to shampoo too often if your hair is curly or kinky. Shampooing two times per week with a moisturizing shampoo is best as this will prevent you from washing too much oil out of your hair, which would leave you with extra frizz.
Chemically-Straightened or Relaxed Hair
If your hair is relaxed or chemically treated, it tends to be more fragile. This means you should not alter the pH of your hair too frequently. Shampooing once per week with a gentle formula should suffice.
The strands of color-treated hair are more porous wherein too much shampooing can cause the color molecules to slip out of the follicles. This is why color-treated hair should be washed just twice per week with a color preserving shampoo.
