Damaged hair. It’s something that we’ve all experienced before and, unfortunately, will likely all experience again. Whether you’re spending too much time in the sun, brushing hair when it’s wet, or using straighteners and blow dryers too often, breakage and brittle ends are extremely common. While there are a ton of factors that contribute to split ends and damaged hair, there are also a number of ways to combat what may seem like the inevitable! At MK Hairdressing Studio, your local Aveda Hair Salon in Irvine, we’ve pulled together some helpful tips to keep hair healthy in between haircuts and color below.
Weather the Elements
Did you know that exposing your hair to the elements during harsh seasons can do serious damage? During the summer, sun exposure sucks natural oils from hair, leaving your strands dry and fragile. If you know you’re going to be outside on a sunny day, spritz hair sunscreen on your locks before you step out the door in the morning. Alternatively, cold, windy, and rainy months can be harsh on your hair too. Leave-in conditioner or an occasional hair mask can help to replenish much needed moisture.
What you eat on a daily basis can have a huge effect on hair’s health. Just like your body, hair thrives on proper nutrition and a well balanced diet can strengthen and improve your hair! Nutrient rich superfoods that directly impact hair health include: blueberries, salmon, spinach, oysters, tomatoes, walnuts, kiwi, dark chocolate, yogurt, and sweet potatoes.
Hot Air = Dry Hair
You’re probably familiar with the idea that putting heat on your hair can cause major damage. While you don’t need to nix the blow dryer and curling iron completely, we recommend you give your hair a break from time to time by letting it air dry before styling. If you have to use a blow dryer, try and let your hair dry at least 80% before finishing off with you blow dryer on a cool setting. Teasing or backcombing hair is another easy way to cause major breakage as is wearing your hair in a tight ponytail, so try to limit those styles to a minimum.
