Whether you’re looking to tame your luscious locks or simply ease your morning hair routine, figuring out what treatment is best for your hair can be tricky. Although Keratin treatments and Brazilian Blowouts are frequently mixed up, they both serve different purposes. At MK Hairdressing studio, one of the top AVEDA hair salons in Irvine, our team of talented stylists strive to give you the healthy and trendy hair you deserve. That is why our Irvine stylists have broken down the basics of each treatment to help you determine which treatment is best for you.
Brazilian Blowout and Keratin Treatment Similarities
Since both of these treatments help make hair straighter, it’s no surprise that the two treatments get frequently confused. And despite their major differences, these treatments both have a few things in common, such as:
- Neither treatment is permanent
- They both create a protein layer around the hair shaft which smooths the cuticle and makes the hair look more healthy and beautiful
- Both treatments will help your hair fight humidity, increase shine, and make your hair more manageable
- With either treatment you will be exposed to some level of hazardous chemicals during the heat application
- Both treatments will require less hair washing, so you don’t wash them out of your hair. You should also use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner so your results last longer.
Ideal Candidate For a Keratin Treatment
This treatment is ideal for those who have very curly or voluminous hair, and wish to tame it. Keratin treatments give the hair a much straighter, sleeker, and frizz-free appearance. It will reduce the volume of your hair, which will make your hair much easier to manage. This treatment is not ideal for those who already have straight or thin hair, since it will just further flatten your locks. If your hair is on the straighter or thin side, then a Brazilian Blowout might be a better choice for you.
Ideal Candidate For a Brazilian Blowout
If you are simply looking for frizz-free hair that’s a bit easier to manage, this is the option for you. Brazilian blowouts are a gentler option than Keratin treatments, since it will be more voluminous and less straight and slick. Yet it gives the hair a more natural wave and body. This option is also perfect for those with curly hair that want to keep their natural curls but want softer, free-free, hair that is easy to control.
What to Expect During Treatment
Both procedures take a decent amount of time, but will save you a significant amount of time when you style your hair later on. A Keratin treatment may take up to 3 hours to achieve, while a Brazilian Blowout typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Regardless of the treatment, the stylist will first prep your hair with a clarifying shampoo and then towel dry it. After, the product will be carefully applied and evenly distributed throughout your hair.
With Keratin treatments, they now blow dry the hair and then place a cap on the head for 20 to 30 minutes so that the product has a chance to absorb into the hair shaft. It is blow dried again, and flat ironed at 450 degrees, and is to not be washed for three days.
With Brazilian Blowouts, it’s a little simpler and tend to be a more convenient option due to its instant results. After applying the product, the hair is blow dried, straightened, and then rinsed again to remove product. They will apply a conditioning masque, and finally blow dry your hair once more for the final result. Once this process is finished, your results are immediately visible and there are no restrictions to how long you can wait to wash your hair.
